Singing their Hearts Out for Croí!

A feast of choral music is in store for music lovers on Saturday January 25th, when Galway Choral Association presents its Winter Concert in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway at 8pm.

This Winter Evening of Choral Music is being staged this year by Galway Choral Association to support the work of Croí in the area of Heart Disease & Stroke. The evening will provide a wonderful variety of all that is best in choral singing in a magnificent setting.

The concert will feature Mozart’s well known “Credo” Mass in C Major and the choir, under the baton of Musical Director Norman Duffy, will be accompanied on organ by Galway native David Grealy. Four emerging singing talents will join the choir as soloists for the performance: Sarah Skerritt, soprano, Judith Lyons, alto, Eoin Hynes, tenor and Brian Kelly, bass.

The choir will also perform the haunting “Funeral Ikos” by Sir John Tavener and the beautiful “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Gabriel Fauré. Tavener died on Nov 12th last and the choir is looking forward to singing his wonderful music in his memory.

In keeping with the variety contained in GCA performances, the concert will be opened by guests, The Acapella Knights, a recently formed Galway based male singing group.

Announcing the event, Chairman of Galway Choral Association, Michael O’Hare said “I am delighted that GCA is staging this concert in support of Croí. The foundation has been to the fore in the fight against Heart Disease & Stroke in the west of Ireland since 1985. We are looking forward to working with Croí for the first time to assist them in their fundraising efforts to maintain and enhance the top-class cardiac facilities available in Galway.

Welcoming the concert, Croí’s Neil Johnson said “ this is a very generous gesture of support and we are deeply grateful to Galway Choral Association for choosing to support our work in this way. The proceeds of this event, together with all our fundraising efforts throughout this year, will allow us to do the work we do. Croí is totally dependent on this type of community support as we are not a state funded organisation and each year we must generate our own revenue to fund our work in the areas of heart disease, stroke, diabetes & obesity. We hope as many people as possible will support or attend this feast of music, presented by a very highly regarded choral group”
